We’ve been working on finding and acknowledging your strengths as a roller derby athlete. In the last challenge, we asked you to create a Pre-Practice Confidence Routine. The goal was to boost your confidence before every practice.
Remember that your routine is YOUR routine. You want to make sure that it’s simple and enjoyable, for you.
Now it’s time to tackle the moments where we lose our confidence. Knowing is half the battle! So let’s find out exactly how and why these moments happen, so that we can learn to overcome them in our subsequent mini-challenges.

Even though as athletes we work on building our confidence, there are moments where we lose it. These Confidence Killers vary from athlete to athlete.
Confidence Killers are usually triggered by a specific moment. These moments can lead to feelings, thoughts, and actions that can hinder your performance.
Examples of some common Confidence Killers:
- Unable to breakout of your initial pass
- Getting goated by the opposing team
- The first or last jam of the game
- Receiving penalties
- When you’re out of your comfort zone at practice
- Tryouts / practice before roster announcements
Your job for this mini-challenge is to identify your Confidence Killers. Sometimes we remember the unwanted feelings, thoughts, and/or actions, but not necessarily what is at the root of the problem: what triggered or altered the change in your mindset.
Using the Confidence Killers Reflection Worksheet you will need to reflect on what’s happening to you during these specific moments in order to gain a better understanding of what is draining your confidence. You can have more than one Confidence Killer, so reflect on your past and present performances.
